About US

The Stork Conservation Center opened its doors in May 2023 in the building of the former synagogue in the village of Bodrogkeresztúr. The building welcomes visitors on 180 m² with an interactive exhibition focusing on bird protection and biodiversity conservation.

Interactive Exhibition

A special exhibition at the center will introduce you to programs aimed at protecting storks and other bird species. In addition to the exhibition, an educational trail will also be open to visitors, showcasing outdoor bird protection equipment. On the educational trail, you can learn about “stork baskets” placed on top of electricity poles and different types of birdhouses.

The Protection of Biological Diversity

The center’s goal is to promote the protection of biological diversity, with a particular emphasis on the protection of storks, which are especially important to the local community. The exhibition features a temporary exhibit and an interactive corner, as well as a puppet theater primarily aimed at shaping the attitudes of young children.

Entertainment and Learning

In addition to the aforementioned educational trail, the exhibition courtyard also features a large chessboard with stork-shaped pieces, offering visitors an opportunity to play.

Why is the Center Located Here?

Bodrogkeresztúr is home to one of the largest white stork colonies in Hungary. The village stands out both in terms of its population size and the proportion of stork nests occupied by breeding pairs.

Bodrogkeresztúr plays a key role in the life of white storks. Contrary to national trends, the number of storks living here has not decreased, but actually increased, which is warmly welcomed by local bird enthusiasts.

The History of the Exhibition

The idea for the exhibition is a tribute to the work of local ornithologist Zoltán Petrovics, and it was developed and is operated by the Zöld Kör Association. The project was realized with the support of the European Union’s Slovakia-Hungary Interreg V-A Program, in collaboration with the Municipality of Bodrogkeresztúr.

Open hours

Between May 1 and September 30.
